I ENLISTED IN THE U.S. ARMY

OCTOBER 3, 2013

Hi all,

This week I finalized a conscious decision to enlist in the United States Army. The contract is signed. The oath has been taken.

As long as everything goes as planned, I will be working in the 35 series field of Military Intelligence. I am shipping out for Basic Combat Training in mid-November. My last day at the South Jersey Times (my loving and supportive home since Nov. 1, 2010) is Oct. 20.

There are many factors that went into this decision, which was a long time coming — since early this year. But ultimately, I felt compelled to serve our country and seek a new career. I believe it's important to give back to something that has given us so much. And, when you're single and in your 20s, it's OK to make a decision that changes your life. Of course, leaving an exciting career in journalism was a difficult choice, but I have faith that I won't be disconnected completely. So, that's that.

Those who knew about this decision prior to this announcement have been nothing but supportive and loving, and I am so thankful for that.

Sadly, my free time is limited in terms of getting to see everyone before I leave — there is a lot of orientation and training (physically, financially, etc.) prior to my ship date. But I hope to throw a little going away party soon, so stay tuned. If I don't get to see you (or even if I do), I'll give you my address as soon as I can. Please send letters. I will need lots of letters to keep me sane during the 10 weeks of basic training.

I hope you all understand. Thank you for your support.

God bless,

Jim.
